Sensorimotor Psychotherapy
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is an approach that builds on traditional psychotherapeutic understanding but includes the body as central in the therapeutic field of awareness, using observational skills, theories, and interventions not usually practiced in psychodynamic psychotherapy.
Excerpt taken from the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute:
The body, for a host of reasons, has been left out of the “talking cure.” Psychotherapists who have been trained in models of psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, or cognitive/behavioural therapeutic approaches are skilled at listening to the language and affect of the client. They track the clients’ associations, fantasies, and signs of psychic conflict, distress, and defenses. Yet while the majority of therapists are trained to notice the appearance and even the movements of the client’s body, thoughtful engagement with the client’s embodied experience has remained peripheral to traditional therapeutic interventions.
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is a detailed theory that points to the need for an integrative mind-body approach to trauma; by adding body-oriented interventions to therapy one can increase the depth and efficacy of their clinical work. By synthesizing bottom-up and top-down interventions, the therapy technique combines the best of both worlds to help chronically clients find resolution and meaning in their lives and develop a new, somatically integrated sense of self.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
Eye Movement Sensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can assist to successfully alleviate complaints by processing the components of the contributing distressing thoughts, memories, images and feelings.
Excerpt taken from the EMDR International Association:
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is a set of standardized protocols that incorporates elements from many different treatment approaches. To date, EMDR has helped an estimated two million people of all ages relieve many types of psychological stress.
Neurobiological Approach
By understanding and considering the internal workings of the brain, body, emotional, mental and imagery systems, one can begin to understand that all human behaviour makes sense. When one considers what is happening within our brain systems and nervous system, the emotional and behavioural things that we do begin to become clear.
Collaborative Counselling
At Associated Counselling, we tend to take a collaborative approach to our counselling, where the client is seen as the expert in their lives and experiences and the therapeutic relationship is built upon mutual respect. There is a history within the counselling and therapeutic fields that the clinician is the expert. While our therapists have learned a lot within their training about people and social systems, we realize that we know little about each individual client.
A Great Tool to Reach Your Full Potential
Our training gives us guidelines, theories and experience. However, it does not give us a perfect understanding of each individual. Each client is seen as an expert in themselves and counselling is a great tool to help you reach your full potential so that you can have a clear understanding of yourself.
